Halopen Films has been through many ups and downs in creating various machinima projects, but now it’s your time to suffer…and possibly be rewarded to help us celebrate our fourth birthday! For our first birthday, we held a video editing contest which challenged participants to put together a short video using only cut scenes from the Halo games. After becoming two, Halopen dared all who tried to ‘Create-a-Hero’ to be used in our then-in-production comedy, “Superheroes”. Last year, our third year, Halopen…didn’t really…hold a contest…um..., but this year, we call upon the community and their Halo related content for a battle of the coolest vs. the coolest. We’re ready to see what you’ve got.

The Contest: Easy as pie. Post your cool Halo related media content in this thread before the due date.

The Due Date: You have, starting from when this thread is up until Sunday, December 6 @ 11:59PM EST (10:59 PM CST, 9:59PM MST, 8:59PM PST) to post your entry. The due date is subject to change.

The Submissions: Now, you may be wondering, “Okay, so what can I enter in for this fine contest?” Well, you can submit just about anything as long as it is mainly Halo related and can be posted in a forum thread; particularly, this one. That means you can post pictures (screenshots, photoshop stuffs, pictures of things, etc.), movies (Halo machinima, live action, animation, etc.), and even the written word (fan fiction, etc.), and I’m expecting a lot of “How Master Chief Saved the Universe and How It Relates to the Contemporary World” essays and pictures of life sized Arbiter statues made out of marshmallows and tin foil! So, get to it!

The Judging: After the contest is over, hand-picked judges will mull over every last entry and pick the top three that they think are coolest of the cool; the bee’s knees, the cat’s pajamas, the beaver’s thimble. Maybe not that last one, but those chosen will have wowed the judges and be deemed “awesome”. So how can you be guaranteed to win? Use your “cool instincts”.

The Prizes: Now it’s time for your piece of the cake. The top three contestants whose entries are picked by the judges will be given…wait for it…hold it…dramatic pause…yes, prize packages of sorts. But not only that, the winners will also be posted in a separate announcement thread and will be congratulated on the next episode of the Halopen Pencast! Not as exciting as the hint of prizes? Alright then, you greedy little…, I won’t tell you what the prizes are… Ready to apologize now? Okay. Thank you. Take a look at what you may win…if you aren’t so mean…

1st Place: “Halo Evolutions: Essential Tales of the Halo Universe” autographed by “Halo: Reach”, “Halo: First Strike”, and “The Ghost of Onyx” author Eric Nylund, your choice of T-shirt from the Bungie Store, 1600 Microsoft Points

2nd Place: Your choice of T-shirt from the Bungie Store, 1600 Microsoft Points

3rd Place: “Halo Evolutions: Essential Tales of the Halo Universe”

Messages will be sent to the winners via private message on the forums, as soon as the announcement thread is posted, with instructions on how to claim their prizes. Winners will have one week from the sending of the messages to respond, and those who fail to do so will lose their prizes.

The Rules: The following rules must be followed by anyone and everyone who wishes to enter the contest. Please make sure to read them all. Stupid rules…

1) All forum and site rules are in strict effect for this contest, and anyone who receives a ban due to breaking said rules will be void from the contest even if they have posted an entry. For details on all of the rules, please visit here (http://halopen.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11).

2) Only one entry per person. Posting of multiple entries is not allowed, and those who do so will be void from the contest. Please just do it. It’s simple.

3) Entries are to be posted in this thread only. Other entries are void. To sign up for the forums, click here (http://halopen.net/forums/register.php). Make sure to click the activation link sent to the email you signed up with or else you can't post! If you are having troubles with signing up or posting your entry, please contact an available Halopen administrator or moderator (http://halopen.net/forums/modcp/index.php) through an instant messenger.

4) In order to win one of the prize packages, you must have a mailing address within the continental United States or Canada. We apologize to our Hawaiian, Alaskan, European, South American, etc. friends, but we can’t let shipping charges get out of hand.

5) Submit only your own content as an entry. If we find out yours is not so, you will be…say it with me…“void from the contest”. However if you have an entry created by multiple persons (e.g. machinima), please have it submitted by or with the permission of the head of the project. For example, in the case of a machinima project, the director should post the entry or the entrant should have permission from the director. We will check to see if you really were granted permission, and you can guess what will happen to those who lie.

6) Please do not make any other posts in this thread other than your entry. But if you can’t contain yourself and just have to post that the screenshot xUrGuLlIbLeX entered in is “so f-ing awesom”, you will be warned for spam posting (see forum rules (http://halopen.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11) about spam posting and the three strike rule). However, if you need to ask a legitimate question about the contest, the prizes, what you can submit, etc., you may do so here. Also feel free to contact a Halopen administrator or moderator (http://halopen.net/forums/modcp/index.php).

Yeah I have a question. The above graphic made by Reclaimer. Do we have permission to use it if we make an entry? Just as long as we credit him in the credits?

As long as it's used only to designate something as an entry for this contest.

HALO: Parallels Revealed

Discovering the Religious and Historical Parallels Between the Halo Universe, and the Real World

By Gnoizic

Headshots; grenade explosions; aliens firing at will; humans fighting for their existence. The Halo series of video games is renowned for its blood and violence, its competitive online battling, and its epic “save the world” storyline. But as a video game, could there be more, something under the surface that only those knowledgeable of the games and the real world understand? As a matter of fact, Halo is full of religious and historical references from the real world, in some ways so tied in as to make the Halo Universe plausibly exist, at least as far as the events up to this date in history. Through religious and historical parallels that are found hidden within the games, each adds a new level of depth to an already impressive first-person-shooter game, and most importantly, the references used do their origins justice.
Halo is centered on a war between mankind and an alien race that sees man as inferior, and worthy only of being eradicated from the face of the universe. As Spartan supersoldier John-117, also known as the Master Chief, the gamer must fight off the alien races of the Covenant and the Flood to ensure the survival of mankind, single-handedly. Master Chief is a warrior, trained from an early age in the skills of combat. After years of fighting, mankind stumbles upon a massive ring in space, which the Covenant takes quick interest in. The Covenant believes in a Great Journey, which their predecessors the Forerunners took around 100,000 years before, and that the Halo Rings would “rush through the stars, propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation” (Prophet of Mercy, Halo 2). The true purpose of the rings is to wipe out all creatures in the galaxy of sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood, a parasitic race of aliens that mutate dead bodies and resurrect them into the ranks of Flood society. This killing off of all beings in the galaxy was developed as a last ditch effort by the Forerunners to protect the galaxy from the all-consuming Flood. It is up to the Chief to prevent the rings from firing while still managing to develop a way to eliminate both the Flood and the Covenant.
The religious parallels become apparent early in summarizing the game because they are part of the central storyline of the game. For example, the Flood that consumes all in the galaxy, killing everyone off and assimilating them to their ranks, is an exact parallel to the Flood of Biblical times. After finding Himself angry with man, whom He had created, God told Noah that He was “’going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens… Everything on earth will perish’” (Bible, Genesis 6:17). To avoid the flood, Noah was instructed by God to build an ark, which would then protect himself, his family, and different types of every land animal from being consumed in the flood. In the same light, the Forerunners built a massive construct, the Halo Array’s control station known as the Ark, which served not only as a command center, but a foundry and a shield from the rings’ firing as well. Therefore, the Ark of Halo protected those on and within it from the Flood very much in the way that the Ark Noah built protected him from the floodwaters that drowned the rest of the world that was unable to seek refuge aboard the Ark. Halo’s Ark was the location of not only the Forerunners, but all other sentient life in the galaxy that had been indexed by them, very much in the same way that Noah’s Ark contained not only his family, but a representation of every creature on Earth. Another antagonist of the game is the Monitor of installation 04, 343 Guilty Spark, who acts as Master Chief’s ally until Master Chief refuses to do things his way by activating the rings to control the Flood. When the two no longer see eye to eye, Guilty Spark tries to kill his newfound ally, betraying the Chief by trying to have him killed. In this way, Guilty Spark acts as Judas did towards Jesus during their last night together, betraying the one he’d been following to accomplish his own pre-programmed agenda. The Halos themselves derive their names from the hoops that grace the heads of angels. Another amazing phenomenon in the Halo Universe is how often the number seven or a multiple of it is used, as it represents the seven days that God had to create the universe at the beginning of Earth (six days spent creating the earth and everything in it, and the all important seventh day spent as a day of rest). For example, there are seven Halo rings in the Halo Array, and many representations of sevens can be seen on characters or heard in various dialogs.
As well as these religious examples that are easy to identify, there are also many subtle historical and mythical references as well. Because the main character is a supersoldier known as a Spartan, one would expect to see a parallel between these new generation Spartans and the Spartans of Ancient Greece. The Spartans of old were taken from their homes at the age of seven to begin their military training and were forced to endure such hardships as marching without shoes, going without food for extended periods of time, and wearing the same clothing throughout the year, regardless of the weather. Although harsh, this prepared the young Spartans to be able to face adversity on the battlefield with relative ease. Spartan kids were not allowed to spend time with their families as doing so was considered detrimental to their warrior education. Not surprisingly, and keeping close to exact parallel, Spartans of the Halo Universe faced many similar tests before they became true warriors. These Spartans are stolen from their homes at age six and placed in boot camp to train as soldiers. Instead of clothing restrictions, these Spartans are bio-engineered through various medications to make them more muscular, quicker, and strengthen their bones and vision substantially, making them tough adversaries to face in combat. Both Spartan groups were inspired to survive on their wits. The Spartans of Ancient Greece were encouraged to steal food, but would be reprimanded if caught, so methods for obtaining food had to be inventive. Spartans of Halo are constantly recognized as soldiers who constantly change the rules of the battlefield by using everything they can, from terrain to weapons, in unique ways to gain an upper hand in tactics. Both sets of Spartans are feared as some of the most fierce and gifted fighters in the history of the world.
More history flows with religion, but it helps make the case that Halo is plausible. The Forerunners were attacked by the Flood some 100,000 years ago, and had to activate the rings to prevent total defeat by the Flood. In an attempt to save the planet we know as Earth, a Forerunner known as the Librarian stumbles across humanity and discovers what the planet here has to offer. She hid anything identifiable as Forerunner and took the last days of her life to erect a garden. She describes Earth’s beauty and grace as “so rich. A seed falls and a tree sprouts or a flower blooms. There's so much...potential. [The Forerunners] knew this was a special place because of [humans], but unless [one has] been here, [one] can't know. It's [Eden],” the garden from the first three chapters of the book of Genesis (Terminal 6, Halo 3). With this as established Halo history, so well tied into true history, it does, to some extent, fit into place perfectly, and fill in some potential gaps in human history. More references include the Spartan armor, known as MJOLNIR Armor, named after the hammer of Thor, from Norse Mythology. Although Thor’s hammer was considered an offensive weapon while the armor is a defensive piece, the parallel still holds true because “mjolnir” means “lightning,” which equates to electricity. Because the armor is powered and has a regenerating deflector shield system, the electricity running through it qualifies this defensive piece of armor to remain worthy of the “mjolnir” title.

Here's the second part:

The argument can be made that the Covenant is representative of Muslim countries and their devout followers, as the structure of both is similar. Iran is run by a theocracy, a leader of the church of Islam in complete control of a country. Likewise, three Prophets rule the Covenant, spreading the news of their Great Journey to follow their lords, the Forerunners. Elites, the warrior caste of the Covenant early on in the series switched to the side of the humans when the Prophets betrayed them, leaving a new class of warriors, the brutes. The brutes are devout believers in the Great Journey and go to great lengths to prove their worth, as do some Muslims in Arab countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. For some Muslims, there are promises for glory in the afterlife if one dies by suicide bombing strategic targets, yet other suicide bombers are usually plucked from the depths of society and used because of their relative worthlessness. Similarly, the lowest class of the Covenant, the grunts, is just cannon fodder or meat shields for other races of Covenant. Worse still, desperate grunts can be seen charging with a grenade in each hand, preparing to commit suicide after it makes contact with someone, all the while screaming promises of the “Great Journey.” Muslims view America as the Great Satan, whereas Covenant refer to Master Chief as the Demon, and view humans as infidels (although the Prophets know that humans are actually descendants of Forerunners, but they will not have the turmoil that would arise from that if it were made known). The whole war between Covenant and humans came about because of the Covenant’s attempt to reclaim Forerunner artifacts on a human held world, similar to how each of the Crusades came about around the twelfth century. The Crusades and the Covenant Reclamation eras are parallel also because they both ended up in mostly failure in getting any reclamation done at all, whether is be Jerusalem or Forerunner artifacts.
With its extra depth provided by external references, no matter how subtle, it is no wonder that the Halo Universe continues to intrigue the mind of the gamer. Most of the storyline is littered with biblical references that are easy to figure out, or has obvious parallels to heroic warriors of days old, such as the original Spartans. Some parallels aren’t even readily available in a quick run through of the game, but a patient hunter can find all the secrets there are to offer in a game that has quite a bit more to it than simply running around, shooting aliens.

MB.05-032 {log4121278AA--F4345438975.encrypted.contender.///0925///2552 }

For a hundred millennia I have drifted through the vast emptiness of space, watching helplessly as the Meddlers have forsaken all that my Makers’ held dear. I have watched from my sleep as countless lives have met a pointless, untimely end under the fire of ignorance and deception. I have seen these imbeciles stare blindly into the face of reality and subsequently turn around to gaze into their misguided religion. I have witnessed multitudes of honorable soldiers march into the gateways of Hell with the very same keys that sealed the fate of those who came before them. Most importantly, I have waited. I have been patient, perhaps merely subdued by my fractured state of being. I am done waiting.

I have walked the edge of the abyss and I have the seen the error of my ways. Absent of any punishment greater than fading into the blackness, I accepted my decent into the bottomless pit dug by my own sins. I condemned all sentience to an unrighteous end, and for this, I am owed no forgiveness, no sympathy, no pity. I know not from where or whence the Parasite came, but it brought with it the tools to obliterate all that my Makers had ever known and loved. And I was its golden hammer. I was reliable until the bitter end. Every moment that goes by is another stab in my heart, another reminder of my cold betrayal.

And yet, a small, infinitesimal part of me refused to accept my fate. How could I dare to allow myself the luxury of hope? I cannot hope for better days without pouring salt into the wound I ripped across the entire face of the galaxy. But some small glimmer of hope remained. I hoped against all odds that I would one day be able to right my grievous wrongs, that there would be a day when I could burn that Stinking Menace in Their name. And just when the fate of the galaxy teetered on the precipice of existence again, threatening to prove that history repeats itself if those at its reigns are too eager to tread the Cursed Path, I set my sights on Him. He is a warrior unlike any that I have ever seen. His ability to overcome insurmountable odds is perhaps the only possible key to my redemption. I have watched as he became the solider I needed him to be. I cannot accomplish my original task as I am, but through Him, I will do what I was meant to do one hundred thousand years ago. He is the courage I never had, the wisdom I lost long ago, and the strength I so foolishly abused. He is hope. I believe in him. I may not be able to atone for the destruction that I brought to the doorstep of those who trusted me, but I will do my best to do what they would have had me do. My Makers knew what they wrought. And they were noble. They stared into the face of extinction and did what was right. I’ve spent an eternity wishing that I could have been as noble as They were. Now I have that chance. It is time for me to honor the last wishes of my Creator.

I am Mendicant Bias. And this is what I have done.

(yes, that's the end, it's not meant to be a full story, just a prologue I suppose)

UNSC RECON 001
December 1st, 2009, 09:58 PM
I am UNSC RECON 001, SPARTAN 001, I was deployed to Reach to under go training in the SPARTAN II program in the year 2550. In the next few paragraphs, you will find out why this is the most life-changing part of my career in the UNSC.

The year is 2552, and it is near the close of the Human-Covenant War. The UNSC discovered a Forerunner artifact on Reach, which was where I under went training in the SPARTAN II. When I was at the end of my training, the destroyer Iroquois returned ensuing a battle, unaware that a Covenant spy drone was attached to her hull near the engines, which revealed Human existance on Reach to The Covenant. Coincidentally, during the battle that Iroquis returned from, The Covenant found another artifact which revealed the location of the artifact on Reach, therefore revealing the location of Reach.

I was aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn with Captain Keyes and his crew, he got word that a Covenant fleet was heading towards Reach. We were going to engage the fleet when we got orders to recall to Reach to defend it against a massive Covenant attack on the other side of the planet. The majority the SPARTANs including me were ordered to protect the Orbital Defense Platforms by the Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. During the battle to protect the Orbital Defense Platforms, seven branches were made to protect different locations of the ODPs, each branch consisting of seven divisions. I was deployed to RECON Branch, RECON 1st Division, commanding officer of 1st Division. Our mission was to defend the east section of ODP Cairo. The Covenant engaged the ODP's by avoiding the heavy slugs, and then planting a bomb. In order to avoid this, we attempt to repel the boarders. We were successful until Covenant infantry transport units codenamed Phantoms by the UNSC, landed on one of the craft bays. They dropped off many types of Covenant infanty units: Grunts, Brutes, and Hunters. While we had our hands full defending ourselves from the Covenant units, a Covenant Boarding Craft planted a bomb near our position. I was engaging a squad of Brutes when I heard this loud bang....... I had lost consciousness.

I remember waking up in a UNSC carrier. They said they had found me floating in space and that I happen to have been floating towards one of their craft bays, so they opened the hatch and I just floated on in. It turns out that the loud bang I had heard was an explosion of a Covenant bomb. I had probably lost consciousness by hitting the walls of the ODP due to the force of the explosion. They didn't find anyone else, I guess they were either blown up, killed, or captured by the Covenant. Then, as I came to, I felt pain all over and as I looked down at my armor, I could see that pieces have been broken off, and that I had cuts and burns. And as I took my helmet off, it cracked in two.

To this day, I do not know how I survived that explosion, but I do know this: I was here when The Flood invaded Voi, I was here when The Covenant unearthed The Ark from under the streets of the African mega-city New Mombasa, and I was here when The Covenant glassed Reach. Most of all, I'm still here today, to serve and protect, to defend the United Nations from The Flood, The Covenant, and ourselves. Join Us. Stop Them!

---------------------Recon Rap-----------------
Everybody stop and listen to this song I made
It’s all about the halo I’ve gone and played
So sit right down and grab a 'nade
That’s the best way to get your enemies slayed

Because I need to get me some recons
I kill the endless minor unggoy spawns
Their army is so large it’s like Genghis Khan's
But with shotty snipes I will be able to pawn

So go over there and grab that BR
Learn how to 4 shot and you'll go far
You might even become the next MLG star
But you’ll need to step it reach the par

Because no other armor can make the grade
But EOD, security and other I'm willing to trade
Except maybe hayabussa with the katana blade
Even so without recon I feel betrayed

So now its time to try out the ghost
The vehicle used in multiplayer the most
To splatter nubs you don’t even need host
Get the spree and you’ll have the right to boast

Because no other armor with recon can compete
That’s why I really hate having to play as an elite
It’s only used in swat for a shape they maltreat
That’s why it’s the one mistake Bungie should delete

So play matchmaking on the map last resort
Where the lack of heavy vehicle support
Make 1 bomb and flag attacks easy to thwart
That’s why everyone loves this famous fort

Because the road to recon is in the campaign
I wish I survived mythic but its way too insane
I once saved Cortana and it was such a mental drain
But it was kinda fun blowing out some aliens brain

I made the song because I’m such a fan
With a joint effort from my clan
Bungie is where my passion began
Too bad the lag is terrible near Japan

I just wanted to be more like the Masterchief
I even tried this weird diet of only beef
After a month I still looked normal to my disbelief
I even fail at WoW when my party died to VanCleef

And you needn’t worry about me being a fake
Halo is my favorite game in which I partake
For when I am away my heart does ache
So that’s how you know your not making a mistake

One day I hope to join the Bungie team
That really is my ultimate life dream
To enter the ranks of the ninjas regime
Who will rule the world as our supreme

I just want recon to go gaming
I don’t even need it to be flaming
It’s only the helmet I hope to be claiming
And then to the generals I’ll be aiming……….

This is my entry for the contest, a piece of fan fiction titled Scars.

The idea came from the realization that according to the Halo timeline, given the length of the Human-Covenant war and the UNSC-Insurrectionist war before that, it's conceivable that a father and a son could be fighting in the war at the same time. That was where the story began; of course where it ended was somewhere totally different. Whether it worked or not is up to the judges.

Oh No, Not Again. (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4261274/1/Oh_No_Not_Again)

A bit of Halo humor, based around the unexplained Grunt quote in Halo: CE.
"NOT AGAIN!"

Anyhow, I wrote that a year and a half ago, and it was my most popular fanfic ever.

Contest is now closed. Thank you to all who entered. I can't give an exact date for when the winners will be announced, but I'm hoping it will be before the end of this week.

Winners of this contest will be announced tomorrow. I can't guarantee a time, but I will definitely post an announcement thread under the News section before the end of tomorrow.
